We make a wide variety of functional and sculptural stoneware pottery which is both wheel thrown and hand built. The glazes we use are made in part with ashes from our wood stove and local red clay. Using these local materials gives our pieces their own unique character. The wood ashes are somewhat variable in the results they give when fired. This insures that each piece is different in subtle ways while at the same time the common element of ash in each glaze gives our work a unified and harmonious look.

Rather than buying a commercial clay we mix all of our own clay, as well as our glazes and decorating pigments, by hand. This is a time consuming process but it allows us to formulate recipes that work for our specific firing range and desired aesthetic results. The clay that we use is made from a mixture of stoneware and fire-clay that come from the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys. The clay is bought dry-milled in a powdered form in 50 lb bags. We mix it in a large tub with water into a batter like consistency. When it has dried enough to handle we run it through a pug mill for further mixing and then store it in large containers until we are ready to use it.
